Education about Geology in Hasanuddin University was established in 1977 based on Rector’s Decree No. 1665/E/1977. In the beginning, the establishment of this new program was to support the main scientific framework of Hasanuddin University, which is a concept of maritime continent. The maritime continental concept was adopted due to the fact that Indonesia is an archipelago country which consists of thousands of islands and is dominated by marine area with various natural resources. The initial curriculum was designed to prepare graduates with excellent field skill in exploration and exploitation of natural resources especially in energy and mineral resources specifically in the marine areas in Eastern of Indonesia with its unique geological condition. At that time, Geology Engineering Study Program (GESP) was a concentration program under The Chemistry Department, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Sciences. Due to the National Development Policy in Energy and Mineral Resources utilization, in 1981 GESP became an independent department and the core curriculum was changed from pure geoscience to a combination of pure geoscience and applied geoscience.
During 1990s, Indonesia experienced high economic growth which caused massive development in infrastructures in most developing areas in the country. This condition led to the increasing needs of engineering geology application, environmental concern, identification and mitigation of natural hazard. As the only geological education institute in the Eastern Part of Indonesia, GESP decided to promote the application of engineering and environmental geology as one of the concentration in its core curriculum to support the development of infrastructure and land use planning. Ever since that period, the curriculum of GESP has been constantly reviewed and modified but still embrace the initial purpose in which the graduates of GESP should contribute to achieve the national energy security program, sustainable utilization of mineral resources and natural disaster management program in maritime continental context. This is very important since energy sector, mineral resources and disaster management are keys to the development process in one country. Utilizing appropriate technology in sustainable natural resource management, enhancing the engineering and environmental geology application as well as developing marine geology and tectonic investigation, the sustainable development process will be increased, which in turn will improve the prosperity of Indonesian society. All of these efforts are conducted whilst employing the comparative and competitive advantages of the local value.
Based on the vision and mission of the institution (both university and faculty) along with stakeholders` needs and current demands as explained above, GESP has formulated a graduates profile as a Bachelor Degree which is: ”Being a graduate of Geology Engineering who is able to manage the sustainable energy and mineral resources utilization, the application of engineering and environmental geology and the investigation of marine geology and tectonic optimally both in domestic and international level by applying science and technology in a professionally manner".
In order to achieve this graduate profile, GESP has developed target for 2016-2021. The target is described in the Strategic Plan of GESP 2016-2021 as follow:
(1) Improving the quality of input, process and output
(2) Internationalization of academic quality standard and implementation of research
(3) Increasing the number of publication, citation and technology application
(4) Improving the quality and quantity of services to the stakeholders
Geology Engineering Study Program has been accredited A (372 of 400) by University National Accreditation Board (BAN-PT) until 2021. This achievement is the best three among similar study programs in Indonesia. With all resources, GESP commit to become an excellent teaching and research institution in geology as well as provide a high-quality service to stakeholders` both domestic and international.
