The origin of this program was from offshore structural engineering based on the decision of Rector of Hasanuddin University No. 4266/PT.04.H/C/1995, which stipulated the establishment of four (4) sub-program of study at the Department of Naval Engineering, namely: 1 /. Sub Program Offshore Engineering, 2 /. Sub Program Design, 3 /. Sub Program Ship Machinery Systems, and 4 /. Sub Marine Transportation System. On the other hand, the interest of students who follow these courses every year was increasing, with the final task was varied covering offshore planning and dock planning of offshore engineering. Hence, in 1999 the sub program was submitted to Directorate General of Higher Education to set a course of study with name Ocean Engineering Program refers to the National Curriculum groups majoring in Ocean Technology (1995).

The undergraduate degree of Ocean Engineering Program in Hasanuddin University obtain recommendation from the Directorate General of Higher Education, Department of Education based on decision No.27793/D/T/2001 in August 10, 2001. This study program has two concentrations those are Offshore Engineering and Coastal Engineering including port. Student admission for under graduate program of Ocean Engineering starts in 2002/2003, and has the first alumni in 2004.

The undergraduate program of Ocean Engineering receive accreditation B of BAN-PT in 2010 with No.001/BAN-PT/Ak-XIII/S1/IV/2010. In 2014, the undergraduate program of Ocean Engineering propose the accreditation one more time to obtain accreditation A on April 6, 2015 based on No. BAN-PT 139/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/IV/2015 and valid until April 6, 2020.

During its establishment, the curriculum of Ocean Engineering Program has experienced three times change in 2007, 2011 and 2016. The effort of curriculum revision has been carried out since 2014 by performing benchmark study to manage the program and comparing to some universities in Indonesia, as well as curriculum workshop by inviting alumni and practicians from relevant stakeholders.
