In 2002, Marine System Engineering Study Program have got license for administering under graduate level (S1). The license is refer to the letter from the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGHE) No.:2097/D/T/2002, 20 October 2002. The license then extended which is based on the letter from DGHE No. 3333/D/T/K-N/2009, 31 August 2009. In the beginning, the current Study Program is a Ship Machinery Sub – Study Program in the Department of Naval Architecture according to the Rector Decree of Hasanuddin University No: 4266/PT.04H/C/1995, 24 April 1995.

In order to answer the market need of professional graduate in the field of Marine System Engineering, in 2007 the Marine System Engineering Study Program managing two specialized field of study which are Ship Machinery and Ship Electricity/Control. In 2015, the Marine System Engineering Study Program of Hasanuddin University get a highest level of study program status (Accreditation A) from National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (BAN-PT) No.:502/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/V/2015 and valid until 2020.


Along with the study program development, the curriculum and the teaching instrument of the study program are kept being evaluated and being improved in every four years referring to the graduate market need. This curriculum evaluation is conducted in order to guarantee the quality and the suitability of the study program graduate to the industry need. Since 2016, the Marine System Engineering Study Program have been applied Higher Education Curriculum (Kurikulum Perguruan Tinggi/KPT) according to the Indonesian National Qualification Curriculum (Kurikulum Kualifikasi Nasional Indonesia/KKNI) in which require the students to pass 144 SKS (semester credit system) to graduate with the average study time is 6 - 8 semester and maximum study time is 14 semester. Teaching and learning process are conducted using student centered learning (SCL) method with characterized by labo based education process.

In implementing the main duty and function of the study program as the teaching and learning administrator, the study program accepts for about 40 students each year. Currently, in 2016/2016 school year, the total number of the students is about 172 while the professionally certified lecturers is 11 consist of 4 lecturers with PhD qualification and 7 with Master qualification. Besides teaching and learning, the lecturers also conducted researches according to their expertise and community services as their main duty in Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi. The output from the last two duties is increasing in terms of quantity as well as quality.

As the finished construction of Engineering Faculty new building in Gowa Regency, the Marine System Engineering Study Program currently have 11 laboratories including new research supporting equipment and machines to support researches in the field of Marine System Engineering. These include Ship Hydrodynamic Laboratory, Ship Machinery Laboratory, Electricity and Control Laboratory and Computer Laboratory. In the study program, some laboratory based research groups have been established as well which is based on the lecturer expertise. The member of the research group is the respective lecturers and students. The output of the some researches with domestic and international source of funding conducted by the lecturers has been published in many reputable international journals (Scopus indexed).

In an effort to increase the competitive position as well as the quality of graduates, the Marine System Engineering Study Program have actively accompanying student in their co-curricular activities specifically in an effort to increase students leadership skill, team work as well as critical and creative thinking according to their pursued knowledge. Further, the students have actively join in national level activities such as national unmanned fast speed contest and student creativity program which an activity organized by the Directorate General of Learning and Students, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education. Currently, the study program has graduated for about 350 students with the grade point average (GPA) of 3.00. The alumni have spread not only in Indonesia but in the South East Asian area as well.

In order to actualize the world level study program, the Marine System Engineering Study Program has continuously established collaboration with both domestic and overseas parties specifically collaboration to support the increasing skills of the lecturers in terms of training and further study (PhD level), students exchanges as well as joint researches.
