Minister of Agriculture Hopes Unhas’s Faculty of Engineering Will Assess the Demand for Engineering Graduates
Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo attended the 60th anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University in Makassar.
Indonesian Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo said that on the occasion of this anniversary, the academic community must foster a sense of unity and continue to focus on the future needs of engineering graduates.
“The prospects are certainly very bright because there can be no development without technological advancement and robust research. Moreover, they will inevitably enter fields where their expertise is in high demand by various stakeholders,” he said on Tuesday (October 20, 2020).
The former two-term Governor of South Sulawesi admitted to harboring big dreams for the Faculty of Engineering, noting that a nation’s progress cannot advance without science and technology.
“A region without people skilled in technology will not function smoothly,” added SYL.
He expressed hope that, at the age of 60, the Faculty of Engineering at UNHAS can become a more modern, advanced, and self-reliant institution, producing what society needs today.
“We want the Faculty of Engineering to belong not only to the region but to the world, by meeting national needs to develop Indonesia and improve agriculture through technology,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gowa Regency Acting Secretary Kamsina stated that the presence of the Faculty of Engineering in Gowa represents a special source of hope for the regency. This is because in the Industry 4.0 era, everything revolves around technology—especially now that the world is still grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As a resident of Gowa, I certainly feel proud that this Faculty of Engineering is located here, and it serves as a major asset for Gowa Regency, which can be staffed by technology experts,” she explained.
Furthermore, the Agriculture Minister’s visit to Gowa has also brought blessings. According to her, by providing insight to all university staff in the agricultural sector, they can discover new technologies—meaning that where manual methods were once used, technology can now be employed instead.
“Hopefully, the Minister of Agriculture’s visit will motivate the Faculty of Engineering—for example, by encouraging them to tackle production challenges not with outdated methods but with technology that yields better results than before,” he explained.
