PARPI, the Department of Ocean Engineering, and the Department of Civil Engineering at the Unhas Faculty of Engineering Host a Training Session on Numerical Modeling of Coastal Change
The Department of Ocean Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering at FTUH, in collaboration with the Indonesian Association of Coastal Engineers (PARPI), held a Training Workshop on Numerical Modeling of Coastline Changes. The workshop took place on Wednesday, May 8–9, 2024, in the 2nd-floor conference room of the CoT Building in Gowa.
The event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University, Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Muhammad Isran Ramli, S.T., M.T., IPM., ASEAN. Eng, IPM, who was accompanied by the Chair of the Department of Marine Engineering—who also serves as PARPI’s Secretary-General for the 2023–2027 term—Dr. Ir. Chairul Paotonan, S.T., M.T., represented PARPI’s President for the 2023–2027 term, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Arsyad Taha, M.T., IPM, who was unable to attend.
In his remarks, Prof. Isran stated that this event is part of the university’s tri-dharma—specifically, community service—organized by the Department of Marine Engineering and Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University, in collaboration with PARPI to enhance the competencies of government and private-sector employees, as well as higher education professionals, in the context of sustainable coastal management. Furthermore, this training serves as an opportunity to expand networks among universities, associations, industry, and government. As faculty leadership, we consistently support all beneficial activities such as this one.
Mr. Chairul noted that the event was attended by participants from various regions across Indonesia. Beyond academics, the event also involved several government agencies and industry partners, including the Pontianak and Makassar Regional Marine and Fisheries Service Offices (BPSPL) under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries; the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas); ITERA; ITK; Tanjungpura University; West Sulawesi University; Bandar Lampung University, Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University, Veteran Bandaran University, the West Sulawesi Marine and Fisheries Agency, PT. Konsultan Bumi Air Borneo, CV. Mitra Data Indonesia, PT. Antariksa Globalindo, CV. Aliah Consulindo, doctoral and master’s students in Civil Engineering at Hasanuddin University, and undergraduate students in Marine Engineering at Hasanuddin University.
According to the Chair of the Department of Marine Engineering, coastal line change modeling is essential for the planning of protective structures, land reclamation, and ports—particularly in determining the layout and dimensions of structures—as well as for evaluating coastal areas experiencing issues such as erosion and accretion.
This event was also supported by the South Sulawesi Branch of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) in the Maritime Division, the Hasanuddin University Professional Certification Institute, and the Center of Excellence in Technology (CoT) at the Hasanuddin University Faculty of Engineering, Chairul added.
The training featured two presenters: Ir. Muriadin, S.T., M.Eng., IPM., ACPE, who is currently a lecturer in Civil Engineering at Halu Oleo, and Dr. Ir. Chairul Paotonan, S.T., M.T. The event took place over two days, from May 8 to 9, 2024.
