Prof. Arsyad Thaha Recalls SYL’s Role in Building the Unhas Faculty of Engineering Campus
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Unhas, Prof. Muhammad Arsyad Thaha, reflected on Syahrul Yasin Limpo’s role in the development of the campus located in Gowa Regency.
Prof. Arsyad made these remarks during the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Engineering at Unhas on Tuesday afternoon, October 20, 2020.
The event, held at the Unhas Faculty of Engineering campus on Jl. Poros Malino, Bontomarannu Subdistrict, Gowa Regency, was also attended by Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo.
Speaking in front of Syahrul, Prof. Arsyad Thaha remarked that the former two-term Regent of Gowa seemed to be returning to his own campus.
“We miss him dearly; these are my heartfelt words. This sentiment has long been buried within me for someone who has made such a great contribution to this campus,” said Prof. Arsyad in his remarks.
Syahrul Yasin Limpo is credited with making a significant contribution to the construction of the Faculty of Engineering campus in Gowa Regency.
The land now occupied by the Unhas Faculty of Engineering was formerly used as a paper factory in Gowa Regency.
That land was later donated by Syahrul Yasin Limpo while he served as Regent of Gowa, following the direction of IKA Unhas Chairman Jusuf Kalla.
Later, while serving as governor of South Sulawesi, Syahrul Yasin Limpo participated in laying the cornerstone for the construction of the Unhas Faculty of Engineering campus in 2009.
“Vice President JK and Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo played a significant role during the cornerstone-laying ceremony on May 2, 2009,” recalled Prof. Arsyad Thaha.
“He hoped for a modern campus that would transform the paper mill into a center of engineering excellence, serving as a hub for technological development in Eastern Indonesia,” he added.
Prof. Arsyad also reiterated Jusuf Kalla’s vision to develop the Faculty of Engineering into a technology institute capable of rivaling ITB and ITS on the island of Java.
