To Strengthen Semiconductor Research, the Faculty of Engineering at UH Hosts an International Guest Lecture with Prof. Tony Tae-Hyoung Kim
The Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University (FT-UH), successfully hosted the IEEE Distinguished Lecture—Semiconductor Lecture Series (April 29, 2026), which took place in Lecture Theater I (LT I) of the CSA Building at FT-UH and was attended by participants in person.
The event featured an international speaker, Prof. Tony Tae-Hyoung Kim from Nanyang Technological University, who presented two main topics: “Challenges and Opportunities of Analog Computing-in-Memory in Tiny ML” and “Tiny ML Accelerator Design for IoT Applications: Challenges and Trends.”
The event was also attended by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ir. Faizal Arya Samman, ST, MT, IPU, AER, ACPE, APECEng, who served as the Lecture Chair, as well as faculty members, students, and participants from various academic backgrounds with an interest in semiconductors and intelligent systems.
The event was opened by Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Muhammad Isran Ramli, S.T., M.T., IPM., Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the importance of strengthening international collaboration and advancing research in the fields of semiconductor technology and artificial intelligence as part of efforts to address global challenges.
During the main session, Prof. Tony Kim presented the latest developments in computing-in-memory technology, particularly regarding the application of Tiny Machine Learning (Tiny ML) for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. He explained how this approach can improve energy efficiency and system performance while opening new opportunities in the development of small-scale smart devices.
Additionally, the session addressed challenges in designing Tiny ML accelerators, including resource constraints, power efficiency, and circuit design complexity. The material presented offered comprehensive insights into future technology trends and development directions, particularly regarding the integration of artificial intelligence into embedded systems.
The event took place in an interactive format featuring a question-and-answer session, during which participants showed great enthusiasm for exploring the presented topics in greater depth.
