Unhas’s Professional Engineering Program Graduates Another 233 Engineers
Held on the ground floor of the CoT JK Center building at the Unhas Engineering Campus in Bontomarannu Subdistrict, Gowa Regency, the Chairman of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), Dr. Ir. Heru Dewanto, M.Sc., IPU, administered the oath to 233 engineers who graduated from the Hasanuddin University Professional Engineering Program. All of these engineers had completed the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program for approximately six months to ultimately obtain state recognition of their engineering qualifications through the conferral of the title “Engineer” on their diplomas.
Heru, who was also accompanied by the Executive Director of PII Headquarters, Ir. Faizal Safa, M.Sc., IPU, and the Chair of the PII Headquarters Professional Engineering Program, Dr. Ir. Arief Kusuma Among Praja, MBA, emphasized that obtaining the title of “Engineer” does not automatically fulfill the requirements of Law No. 11 of 2014 and Government Regulation No. 25 of 2019 on Engineering. After obtaining the title of Engineer, an individual must become a Professional Engineer to subsequently receive an Engineer Registration Certificate (STRI) as a requirement to engage in engineering activities or practice in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
The Dean of the Unhas Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Arsyad Thaha, MT, stated in his remarks that the Unhas Faculty of Engineering was very fortunate to receive a mandate from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (RISTEK DIKTI) in 2016 to implement the Professional Engineer Education Program (PPI) at Unhas. This opportunity was not wasted, as the PPI Study Program was launched in collaboration with the Indonesian Institute of Engineers (PII) and the industrial sector, particularly those located in South Sulawesi Province and Eastern Indonesia.
In line with this, Dr. Eng. Ilham Bakri, ST., MSc, IPM, as Chair of the Unhas PPI Program, explained that to date, the Unhas PPI Program has produced 490 engineers across three intakes and three graduation ceremonies. For the upcoming 2019 final semester, the number of applicants currently undergoing document verification has reached 327. Meanwhile, the engineers commissioned today come from various engineering professional backgrounds. The largest group consists of professionals from state-owned and private companies (Pertamina, PLN, Pelindo, Brantas, WIKA, PP, Hutama Karya, Waskita Karya, Nindya, Yodya, Bumikarsa, VALE, Chevron, McDermott, Trakindo, PT. Epson, Bukaka Group, Ciputra Group, etc.), civil service professionals (local governments in South Sulawesi, South Sulawesi-West Sulawesi, Aceh, Papua, West Papua, Bekasi, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, the Central Office for Roads and Bridges, the Central Office for Rivers, BAPPEDA, city/regency inspectorates, etc.), and university professors (Unhas, UNM, UIN, Padjadjaran University, PNUP, ATI Makassar Polytechnic, UNKHAIR, UNHALU, UNISMUH, UMI, BOSOWA, FAJAR, Atmajaya Makassar, Tanriabeng University, Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku, Unsulbar).
